For two years, a team of dedicated and unpaid volunteers created an amazing, diverse and inclusive event, requiring them to give up a significant portion of their lives outside of their day jobs in order to do so.

Our theme this year is Breaking Barriers, with TEDxTownsville 2016 being about overcoming obstacles and shining a light on what is holding our community back. Last week I was fortunate enough to get to see the opening session of TED 2016: Dream. It got me thinking about TED’s famous tag line – ideas worth spreading. What makes one talk stand out, what makes you share a talk and tell your friends about it? Why did I immediately share one talk when it came online and not another?
Last year, I was selected to give a presentation called "What if kindness was cool?" at the inaugural TEDx event in Townsville. It was a truly spectacular and mind-blowing extravaganza of all things awesome, and I was honored to play a small part of it. Over the course of many months of preparation, a rollercoaster of emotion, and a variety of highs and lows, I learned a few things. Participating in a TEDx talk was one of the best things I've ever done, and here are three things I took away from the experience:
THE city’s instalment of an international ideas event has officially opened applications for the community to put forward their stories in a bid to recruit motivating public speakers. The second annual TEDxTownsville event will take place on Saturday, September 17, at a venue to be announced. The theme for the event is Breaking Barriers.
